A Greek mythological Titan, Atlas was skilled in philosophy, mathematics and astronomy. After the Olympians triumphed over the Titans in the Titanomachy war, Zeus condemned Atlas to stand at the Western edge of the earth and hold up the sky on his shoulders. Atlas is the namesake of the Atlas mountains, the mythical City of Atlantis, the Atlantic Ocean and collections of maps used around the world since the 16th century.
